one dozen eggs

it started with the italian meatballs. two eggs into the mix. then we had salt and herb encrusted onaga fish. recipe calls for 5 eggs whites. the next day with our five egg yolks we made soft yolk and lemon ricotta ravioli, using another egg to seal the dough. next morning with leftover ricotta we made lemon ricotta pancakes, which required 4 eggs and lasted two breakfasts.

the return of sourdough

underneath the cover of an indian cotton blanket the dough is purple and dotted with walnuts. the slow moving mass does not rise as predicted, it does not follow a narrative, nor does it have resolution. its main character fumbles and meaders, avoiding conflict and emotional revelations.

korean dessert

comes with whipped cream instead of tart filling, topped with all sorts of lovely fruit, including unpeeled oranges and cherries with stems. this is to convince the buyer the fruit is real. the plastic knife which attends the tart is a nice touch, though it’s made in china.

stomach like an ocean

if you ask for a side of hash browns (extra crispy!) at jan’s on beverly they will bring you a platter of shredded tubers larger than your head. then again, if you ask for a sandwich ‘to go’ from the avalon hotel they will pack you a pair of the cutest little glass bottles of mustard and ketchup to help with your future condiment needs.

plastic handled coffee dispenser vs. stainless steel espresso maker aside, the gestures seem to flatten any difference between the two.

monster

never knew touching the head of a monster could bring so much joy. www.goliathbirdeater.com
but it goes with the concept of the burger salad, (www.go2bloom.com) which very few places do properly. bunfree and covered with melted cheese the patty lays on the greens, dense and juicy but not crushing. the effect is similar to cats who like to lounge on goose down comforters. cats who do not like goose down comforters, on the other hand, prefer to lay on kitchen shears absentmindedly dropped inside of small cardboard shirt boxes.

sleight

the threat of an arctic u-shaped cold front sweeping down into North America has panicked los angeles residents bringing in their pets and potted plants. funny thing is how pets and potted plants seem so enormous once you drag them inside. i am concerned once it hits 32 degrees our little fava bean sprouts will die, and after that the oranges, and then the whole orange tree. then the lawn will be crunchy and hard but not because of the steer manure. the garden hose will probably freeze and explode. a little later on, the neighbor’s bananas will die, before they’ve ripened the slightest bit, and after that maybe it will snow.

take 2

a hairless tip of a chicken wing poking out above the surface of a greenish ochre bowl of curry has the geometry of an isosceles triangle. it’s surrounded by half-submerged yam bits and peas which will not soften, despite the long simmer time. my black and white cat with one paw mid-air attempts to put hair back on the wing.

yearn

black and white cats do not normally yearn for the brown and ochre splotched vat of leftover curry, slightly steaming, oily surface pooling, a hairless tip of chicken wing barely come up for air, with its slight list to one side sparking a dour resemblance to an intoxicated shark.

but mine does, oddly, paws eager.
